It was a ‘Deceitful Maneuver’ of BNP-Jamat,
CPB’s Reaction on President’s 23 Nov. Speech
--------------- ---------
The Political Department of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), in a meeting on 23rd November has criticized the President and Chief Advisor’s 22nd Nov. midnight speech to the nation as a ‘deceitful maneuver’ of BNP-Jamat led 4-party alliance. CPB has said that the people of the country cannot consider the steps declared to be taken by the president as a meaningful victory in the ongoing struggle for free and fair election.
The CPB in a resolution adopted at the meeting of its Political Department said that despite granting 3 month leave to the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) the President has accepted several conditions regarding the CEC’s leave, including his continuous presence in Dhaka during this period. By removing the CEC he has tried to convince the people that he has already fulfilled people’s demand. But at the same time he has actually concentrated in his own hands all the power and authority of President, Chief Advisor and Election Commission. Moreover, he has also kept under his own authority and jurisdiction the appointments of two new Election Commissioners and denied the right of the 10 other Advisors to have any say regarding this appointment. Through these steps his partisan bias in favor of BNP-Jamat has once again been exposed. It is also question as to whether these steps are constitutional or not. So his speech cannot be considered as a meaningful victory of peoples struggle.
Presided over by CPB General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim the meeting also said that the President has taken the opportunity to perform this ‘deceitful maneuver’ taking advantage of the 14-party alliance’s wrong tactics of reducing the entire movement for free-fair election to the one point demand for the removal of Justice K. M. Hasan and M. A. Aziz. Criticizing the President’s speech CPB said that instead of accusing arrogant inflexibility and rigidity of CEC, the President has blamed agitating opposition forces and the agitating people, which sounds the same as the propaganda speech of BNP-Jamat leaders.
The meeting also said that President’s proposal to take some limited steps election will never ensure a for free and fair election, free from money and muscle power, let alone an ‘acceptable and meaningful’ election through at least a ‘neutral referee’ to conduct the election.
The CPB also reiterated that to conduct a free and fair election, effective steps against criminal godfathers, loan defaulters, war criminals, administrative manipulations, election engineering and above all the use of money power to degrade election to ‘Election Commerce’ are also necessary. CPB said that the Party will continue its struggle for the implementation of 53 point demand, a comprehensive charter for radical electoral reform to ensure real free and fair election.
The Party has declared countrywide demonstration on 30th November demanding immediate implementation of 53 point demand charter of electoral reform proposed by the Party and fundamental transformation in country’s policies and its orientation raising the slogan of ‘ Change the Government and Change the Policies”.
