CPB’s Continuous Agitation for Reconstitution of Election commission, CEC's Removal and Warning about Underhand Tricks by BNP, Jamat
--------------------------
The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) carried on continuous daily agitational programmes across the country throughout almost the whole of the month of November demanding removal of Chief Election Commission (CEC) MA Aziz, reconstitution of the Election Commission and 53 point demand charter for comprehensive electoral reform proposed by the Party.
CPB leaders and activists held rallies and staged sit-in and demonstrations across the country everyday from sunrise to sunset from 12th to 28th November.
CPB staged sit-in rallies, discussion meeting and cultural programmes at Paltan intersection, rallies in Demra, Uttara, Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Mirpur and Pallabi in Dhaka as central programmes in the capital during that period.
CPB President Manzurul Ahsan Khan, General Secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim and other central leaders addressed these rallies. Addressing these demonstrations CPB leader urged people to continue the ongoing agitation until the Election Commission (EC) is reconstituted. They said people's right to vote cannot be ensured without an effective reshuffle in the administration. They said the BNP-Jamaat alliance government during its tenure had inducted pro BNP-Jamat personnel in the administration and had made it highly partisan and that there is no alternative to thorough purge of the administration if a free and fair election is to be ensured. Similar programs were organized everyday also in all other districts.
CPB leaders said, President and Chief Adviser (CA) to the caretaker government Iajuddin Ahmed should disclose the recommendations of four advisers regarding reconstructing of Election Commission. People will not accept simply addition of two new election commissioners to the existing four election commissioners. They said that the administration should also be reshuffled to free it from partisanship. Expressing Party’s concern over the issue of deployment of Army CPB leaders said that there is no valid reason to deploy the army countrywide. Criticizing the mysterious role of President regarding Army deployment, CPB leaders said that it clearly signals a conspiracy against the democratic process of the country.
The CPB leaders warned the people of underhand tricks by the BNP-Jamaat alliance, saying that they want to go back to power by all means. They called on the people and all political parties to keep a close watch on the process of reconstituting of the Election Commission so that the caretaker government cannot follow the same tactics as it did during the appointment of the Chief Adviser. Everybody should remain alert so that the demand to reconstitute the EC cannot be stifled due to the conspiracy by BNP-Jamaat alliance, CPB leaders said. Calling upon the 14 Party alliance and other democratic forces, CPB leaders said that it would be wiser to spread the movement to the grass root level rather than to fall into the trap of depending on the foreign imperialist forces to bring about the fulfillment of their demands, as was suggested by Mr. Richard Boucher, the US assistant secretary of state for South and Central Asia during his visit to Dhaka.
Accusing the President and Chief Advisor CPB leaders said that his recent steps and actions clearly indicate that he is doing everything to implement the blueprint of staging a farcical election designed by BNP-Jamat government. They said it is a constitutional obligation for Chief Advisor to ensure a free and fair election with participation of all party. If he fails to ensure this, he himself will have to take all the responsibilities. Criticizing his double standard regarding the reconstitution of the Election Commission and reshuffle of administration, CPB leaders said that he took instant steps to discuss with the CEC about declaration of election schedule after BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, had brought up the demand, where as he took much delayed action regarding the reconstitution of the Election Commission and reshuffle in the administration which are the demands of the whole people.
The CPB leaders also said while the people of the country are today engaged in a struggle for free and fair election, the profit hungry market syndicates, using the excuse of unstable situation, are plundering people’s pockets. CPB leaders demanded crack down on armed fundamentalist militants', adequate foods for Monga(Semi-Famine)-hit areas, control of price hike of essentials and punitive measures against those involved in the price hike.
